Dessers on target as Genk cruises into UCL

Super Eagles forward Cyriel Dessers was the hero for KRC Gent as he scored a late goal to help them a 2-1 victory over Club Brugge at the Jan Breydel Stadion on Sunday.

Dessers was handed a rare start after the coach decided to rest leading scorer Paul Onuachu for the match.

Dessers who scored in two previous games against Royal Antwerp and Anderlecht was impressive on the night and he capped the memorable performance with a late penalty kick.

The 25-year-old was brought down in the box, and after a VAR review, the striker stepped up to convert the spot-kick himself.

The Belgian-born forward has now scored seven league goals for Coach John van den Brom’s men this season.

Ruud Vormer scored the other goal for Genk in the 80th minute, thanks to an assist from Tahith Chong.

The victory means, KRC Genk moved above Club Brugge in the play-off table on goal difference.

Both teams have 44 points after 6 rounds of matches and it was enough to qualify them for the UEFA Champions League next season.
