In the aftermath of Napoli’s 3-1 UEFA Champions League round of 16 defeat to Barcelona on Tuesday, Alessandro Del Piero has come to the defense of striker Victor Osimhen, urging against placing blame solely on the Nigerian forward for the defeat.
Legendary Italian coach, Fabio Capello singled out Osimhen for criticism following the match, pointing to his perceived lack of impact and isolation in attack.
The Forward managed just one shot and won only one of his attempted ten duels across the 90 minutes. Additionally, he was flagged offside six times in the first half alone.
Capello remarked, “He struggled against Barcelona defenders and only won one aerial duel. Barcelona’s weak point was the defence, and he could not emerge.”
Contrary to the criticism, former Juventus forward Del Piero highlighted Osimhen’s positive attitude and commitment against the La Liga giants.
Del Piero stated to Sky Sport Italia, “He put in maximum commitment even if being flagged offside so many times is a little bit excessive. Osimhen’s qualities can’t be questioned.
“Napoli has had a negative season, so you don’t always face what happens with a smile,” He concluded.
