Super Falcons midfield prodigy, Deborah Abiodun has signed her first professional contract with Washington Spirit, a top-tier club in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
The 19-year-old inked a two-year deal with the American outfit, extending until 2027, and includes an option for renewal.
She joins the Spirits as a free agent from her previous club side, Pittsburgh.
Abiodun’s signing cements her place as one of Nigeria’s brightest football talents, and she now joins an elite group of Nigerians who have represented the Washington Spirit.
Following in the footsteps of trailblazers like Josephine Chukwunonye, Francisca Ordega, and Ngozi Okobi, Abiodun becomes the fourth Nigerian to don the Spirit’s iconic jersey.
She joins her fellow national teammates, Asisat Oshoala (Bay FC) and Michelle Alozie (Houston Dash) who also plays in the American League, further solidifying the strong ties between Nigerian football and the NWSL.
Having shone brightly at the international level, particularly during the U-20 Women’s World Cup, Abiodun’s performances have drawn acclaim for her dynamic midfield dominance, pinpoint passes, and unrelenting energy.
She also made waves with the Super Falcons at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup writing her name as one of Africa’s most promising young stars.
Speaking on the move, Deborah Abiodun sent a message to the fans:
“Hello Spirit fans, I’m so excited to be joining the team. Signing with Washington Spirit is a special one and a dream come true for me. Go Spirits.”
Abiodun’s arrival is expected to provide a creative spark in the Spirit’s midfield as they aim to reclaim their spot among the league’s elite.
Her story is not just about personal achievement—it is a beacon of hope and inspiration for young athletes across Nigeria and beyond.
