Chelsea star Marc Cucurella found himself in hot water after the final whistle in their 2-1 victory over Brentford.
The Spanish full-back, who had scored the opener, was shown a second yellow card for his involvement in a scuffle with Brentford’s Kevin Schade.
The incident occurred as players were heading off the pitch, with Cucurella shoving Schade following a brief exchange of words.
The referee wasted no time issuing Cucurella’s second yellow, meaning he was sent off after the match had already concluded. Schade was also booked for his part in the altercation.
The Premier League later explained the decision, stating both players were penalized for “adopting an aggressive attitude” in the aftermath of the match.
The red card means Cucurella will miss Chelsea’s upcoming clash with Everton, but manager Enzo Maresca suggested the incident was a sign that his side, including Cucurella, could improve in terms of discipline and composure.
It caps a turbulent week for Cucurella, who had already found himself under scrutiny for mistakes during Chelsea’s London derby against Tottenham.
Despite his fine header to open the scoring against Brentford, Cucurella’s late lapse in judgment left a bitter taste on what had otherwise been a promising display.
