Chelsea FC’s Right-Back, Marc Cucurella sent shockwaves after dropping an heartbreaking revelations, openly admitting that a return to FC Barcelona would be “difficult to reject,” fuelling fresh transfer speculation around the Spanish defender.
Speaking ahead of Spain’s international friendly in Barcelona, the 27-year-old did little to shut down rumours linking him with a move back to his boyhood club.
“It would be difficult to reject [Barça],”
“And not just for me. I would have to think about my family as well. If [an offer] comes, it comes, and we will have to see what decision we would make.”
From La Masia to Stamford Bridge – The Story of Cucurella
Cucurella’s connection to Barcelona runs deep.
After developing at the club’s famed academy, he made just one senior appearance before embarking on a long journey through Spanish football with SD Eibar and Getafe CF.
His breakthrough came in England with Brighton & Hove Albion, earning him a big-money move to Chelsea in 2022, where he is contracted until 2028.
Cucurella suffered early struggles in London but has since established himself as one of Chelsea’s most reliable performers.
“Spain Is Always Spain” – Cucurella
The defender also admitted the emotional pull of returning home remains strong, even if he insists he is not actively pushing for a move right now.
“Spain is always Spain. It is where I grew up and you always think about going back.”
“But I would [prefer to] leave it for a few years down the line. I am very happy here and it is a great life experience.”
Pressed further on Barcelona specifically, he doubled down:
“It is clear if that situation [Barcelona making an offer] did arise, it is hard to turn down, but I would have to consider it in the end.”
“It is not just me, I also have to think about my family and together we would have to decide what’s best for us.”
“As I have said before, right now I am not thinking about that. If it comes, it will come, and we will see what decision is made.”
Frustration Boils Over at Chelsea
While flirting with a Barcelona return, Cucurella also delivered a brutally honest assessment of Chelsea’s current struggles, especially after their heavy Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
“Results like that are always hard to take,”
“You are fighting and training every day only to realise, at the very end, that when games matter, we are still a bit away from the top level.”
He questioned the club’s long-term strategy of focusing heavily on youth recruitment:
“I understand this is part of the club’s policy and they want to take this direction; signing young players and looking to the future.”
“However, for all of us who are still here and want to win big things, moments like this make you feel discouraged.”
“We have a good core of players. The foundations are there, but to fight for major trophies such as the Premier League or the Champions League, you need more.”
Chelsea Dressing Room Instability Exposed
Cucurella also revealed internal frustrations over managerial instability, particularly the decision to sack former boss Enzo Maresca.
“The moment Maresca left, it had a big impact on us,”
“These are decisions taken by the club. If you asked me, I would not have made this decision.”
“To make a change like that, the best thing is to wait until the end of the season. You would give everyone, the players and the new manager, time to get ready, have a full pre-season.”
He added that the constant changes have disrupted the squad’s rhythm:
“The instability around the club comes from this, in a nutshell.”
“We had a caretaker [former under-21s coach Calum McFarlane] first, then a new manager, with new ideas and no time to work on them. It is what it is.”
Is Chelsea Facing Potential Exodus?
Before Cucurella’s comments, there have been growing uncertainty at Chelsea, with several key players linked with moves away from Stamford Bridge.
Midfielder Enzo Fernandez has hinted at a desire to live in Madrid, while speculation also surrounds Cole Palmer.
Only Moises Caicedo has publicly committed his future to the club.
Now, Cucurella’s openness to Barcelona adds another layer of concern for a team already battling inconsistency on and off the pitch.
What Happens Next?
For now, Cucurella insists he is happy in London but his words have undeniably opened the door to a dramatic return to Barcelona.
With the Spanish champions reportedly keen to strengthen at full-back, and Chelsea navigating a period of instability, this is a transfer story that could explode in the coming months.
Hence, if Barcelona come calling, Cucurella has already made it clear, it won’t be easy to say no.
