Re-run elections into four sports Federations where initial election results were cancelled have stalled after Minister of Sport, Solomon Dalung was served with a Court Injunction halting the process.
Brila.net learnt that the elections which were supposed to hold on Wednesday July 20, in Abuja were called off after Minister Dalung relayed the court writ through his Public Relations Officer.
Delegates had already converged in the Abuja days ahead of the rescheduled elections into the Athletics Federation, Taekwondo, Wrestling and Gymnastic Federations.
Speaking after the news of the cancellation, Taekwondo Federation member, Chika Chukwumerije insists the Ministry of Sports ought to give further clarification on which elections were affected by the injunction.
He said,’Knowing the election was halted because of a Court injunction, of course you’d expect the Minister obeys court injunctions.
‘But, we should also remember that some members have been here for two days, staying in hotels and they don’t really have that kind of money.
‘If you thought in terms of finances, what has been sunk into these elections could have been used to prepare our athletes for tournaments. Mind you we’re already missing out of some of those international events.
‘The Ministry should be able to give us a clear interpretation of the injunction.”
Earlier in the month, Chairman of the National Sports Federations Electoral Appeals Committee, Alhaji Abdulrazak Salau said in a statement, that the influx of petitions which followed the June 13, 2017 elections at the Abuja National Stadium were overwhelming and needed more time to attend to.
“We have had a beehive of activities since the Appeals Committee gave its verdict on June 30, 2017. The Committee has been bombarded with petitions and complaints from these Federations including Rugby.
“It became necessary for us to shift the election re-run date by 5 days to enable the monitoring bodies including the Election Committees to conclude screening and verification of candidates to ensure that what happened in the first election does not repeat itself.
“We are very careful to also ensure that candidates comply with the guidelines and present the right documents for verification. Thereafter, the master list will be published for all to see before the bye elections,” Salau said.
Fresh Presidential elections were to hold in Athletics, Taekwondo, Wrestling and Gymnastics while zonal elections will hold in Judo (South West) Athletics (South East and North West) and Taekwondo (South West).
All Zonal, Vice and Presidential elections will take place in the Rugby Federation.
