Club Brugge head coach, Nicky Hayen has spoken out in defense of midfielder Raphael Onyedika following the player’s controversial red card during the Belgian Pro League clash against Sporting Charleroi.
Onyedika was sent off in the 57th minute for what was deemed a reckless challenge, but both Hayen and team captain have criticized the referee’s decision, calling it excessively harsh.
Hayen expressed his frustration with the call in his post-match conference.
“That is never a red card. Yes, he goes in hard, but not with the studs on the ankle. It was not a dangerous action, and he also touches the ball,” the coach stated.
He further stated that the challenge did not merit a sending-off, adding, “It’s not like he hit him full on the ankle or foot. I think a yellow card would have been more than enough.”
As a result of the red card, Onyedika is now set to miss Club Brugge’s next three league fixtures against Union St Gilloise, Westerlo, and Anderlecht.
The Nigerian international has been a regular presence for the club, featuring in eight league games this season.
