As the 2024-25 La Liga season kicks off, all eyes will be on Nigerian midfielder Chrisantus Uche, who is set  to make his debut for Getafe against Athletic Club today.

At 21, Uche has already carved a remarkable path for himself, joining Getafe from AD Ceuta on a four-year deal.

He follows in the footsteps of fellow Nigerians Peter Etebo and Ikechukwu Uche, becoming the third player from his country to don the blue of Getafe.

Hailing from Owerri, Uche’s journey began with Spanish fourth-tier side Moralo CP, who signed him in July 2022.

It didn’t take long for him to make waves as his standout performances in Western Spain propelled Moralo to the brink of the promotion playoffs.

Last season, Uche played for Cueta, where his talent and great displays turned heads across the league with Getafe wasting no time in securing his signature, reportedly for a fee of €500,000 to bring him on board.

Preseason saw Uche hit the ground running, quickly earning the trust of Getafe’s boss, José Bordalás.

The young Nigerian made an instant impact, scoring Getafe’s lone goal in a friendly against Atletico Madrid on August 3.

Getafe manager José Bordalás expressed his excitement about Uche’s potential as the midfielder prepares to make his La Liga debut stating:

“He is a player with great potential, and as you know, he was a personal request of mine to the president last winter.

“We are very happy because we believe he has a lot of potential,” the 60-year-old coach said.

“When the championship starts, we’ll see the level he can bring to the team. We have a lot of confidence in him; he has a very good attitude, and his teammates are helping him a lot.”

For Getafe, Uche’s signing is seen as a significant boost. After finishing 12th last season, the club is eyeing a return to European competition

With Uche in their ranks, Getafe hopes to revive past glories and push for a return to European football.
