Former Nigerian international Abiodun Obafemi has suggested that the postponement of the African Nations Championship, CHAN presents an opportunity for Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle to familiarize himself with the players and begin implementing his ideas.
The Confederation of African Football, CAF recently announced that the 2024 CHAN, initially scheduled to take place from February 1 to February 28, 2025, has been moved to August. However, CAF has yet to confirm the exact dates.
Speaking with Brila FM, Obafemi stressed the importance of utilizing the extra time effectively.
He urged Chelle to recall the players to camp and organize friendly matches, even though the tournament has been delayed.
“Regardless of whether CHAN has been postponed, gather the boys together; we don’t have to wait till August,” Obafemi advised.
“If I were in Chelle’s shoes, I would recall those boys to camp and organize friendly games to test them.”
Obafemi also highlighted the potential for CHAN players to make the step up to the senior team, particularly with the World Cup qualifiers resuming in March.
He believes this extended period should be used to evaluate the home-based players for future call-ups.
Eric Chelle recently met with the home-based Super Eagles players, accompanied by NFF Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen.
The delay could prove a blessing in disguise, allowing Chelle more time to build a cohesive team capable of excelling in CHAN and contributing to Nigeria’s broader footballing ambitions.
