The Home Eagles are bracing for a challenging start at the 2024 African Nations Championship, CHAN after failing to secure a seeded position in the tournament draw.
The draw ceremony is scheduled to take place on Tuesday at the Confederation of African Football, CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
According to CAF, the seeding is determined by teams’ performances in the last three CHAN editions (2022, 2020, and 2018).
Co-hosts Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, alongside defending champions Senegal, will occupy Pot 1, while Pots 1 and 2 feature the highest-rated teams in the tournament.
This leaves the CHAN Eagles vulnerable to being drawn against top-seeded teams in the group stage.
The Nigerian team secured their place in the competition after a six-year absence by defeating arch-rivals Ghana 3-1 on aggregate in the final qualifying round last weekend.
CHAN is unique in that it features national teams comprised exclusively of players from their respective local leagues.
The 2024 edition will run from February 1 to February 28, 2025.
With a tough road ahead, the CHAN Eagles will aim to make their mark despite the challenge of facing some of Africa’s strongest teams early in the tournament.
