Both the AFCON and WAFCON as CAF’s flagship tournaments for National teams
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has refuted reports about the postponement of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
On Wednesday, quotes credited to CAF’s General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba had detailed where the Governing body stood as far as the Continental tournaments.
Mosengo-Omba revealed that CAF was behind schedule over the decision of the kick off dates for its biggest tournaments.
Due to the new FIFA Club World Cup, scheduled to be held from June to July next year, the 2025 AFCON had to would be moved to January 2026.
However, CAF, through their official X handle, denied these claims, stating:
“Reports on AFCON 2025 are untrue. The CAF Executive Committee will meet, deliberate, and decide on the AFCON 2025 dates. CAF will thereafter issue an official statement on the matter.”
CAF General Secretary on the potential postponement
Speaking with BBC reporters, Veron Mosengo-Omba, acknowledged the challenges of fitting the competition into an already crowded calendar.
He noted that with the WAFCON slated for this year and AFCON next year, scheduling has become a challenge for CAF.
“We are supposed to play this year but we have teams engaged in the Olympics, so we have to find another date,
“We are talking with Uefa, because most of the players are playing in Europe, the European Club Association and also with Fifa in order to find [a] suitable date.”
“For the men, we need to make sure that the dates that we’ll be choosing will be in the interests of the players,” said the Swiss-Congolese, highlighting issues around the workload of the continent’s elite players.
