Super Eagles and Nantes forward, Moses Simon has called on the Confederation of African Football to take immediate action following the team’s harrowing experience in Libya.
Simon, along with other Nigerian players, technical staff, and officials, was stranded for over 18 hours at Al Abraq Airport in Libya after their flight was unexpectedly redirected.
Initially, the team was scheduled to land at Benghazi Airport, but they were instructed not to do so upon arrival, leading to confusion and delays.
Despite the ordeal, the Super Eagles remain focused on their mission to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON 2025.
They had earlier secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Libya in Uyo, thanks to Dele Bashiru’s match-winning goal, and were ready to replicate their performance before this disruption.
Expressing his frustration, Simon took to his X (formerly Twitter) handle to share his thoughts:
“After enduring a terrifying ordeal in Libya, we are incredibly grateful to have returned home safely.
“No one should ever have to go through such a horrifying experience,and I hope that CAF takes immediate action to prevent any similar occurrences in the future.”
CAF has confirmed it is investigating the incident. In a statement released on Monday, the body said;
“The matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF Statutes and Regulations,” CAF said in a statement on Monday.
With the situation under CAF’s review, the Super Eagles players will now returned to their respective clubs. The team will resume their AFCON qualification campaign in November, facing Benin and Rwanda as they aim to secure a spot in the 2025 tournament.
