Bayer Leverkusen forward, Victor Boniface expressed his relief after playing a pivotal role in his team’s thrilling 4-3 comeback victory against Wolfsburg, on Saturday.
Wolfsburg entered the half-time break with a 3-2 lead, but Leverkusen turned the match around after the restart.
Manager Xabi Alonso’s substitutions of Boniface and Piero Hincapié proved to be decisive.
Just four minutes into the second half, Hincapié headed in the equalizer from a corner, leveling the score at 3-3.
Nigeria international Boniface, who replaced Patrick Schick, delivered the match-winner in the 96th minute, securing Leverkusen’s dramatic victory.
Reflecting on the hard-fought match, Boniface admitted it was a tough challenge but expressed his delight with the outcome.
“We knew how Wolfsburg would perform and what to expect,” Boniface told the club’s official website.
“At halftime, we regrouped because we really wanted to turn the game around for our fans. We did that, and of course, we are very happy now.”
Boniface’s late heroics captured the headlines, and he will look to continue his fine form when Leverkusen take on Bayern Munich next week.
