Bayer Leverkusen’s forward, Victor Boniface, envisions donning Nigeria’s jersey at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, scheduled from January 13 to February 11.
The 22-year-old’s outstanding performances for Leverkusen have earned him a coveted spot in the Nigerian squad, having scored eight goals and provided five assists under the guidance of coach Xabi Alonso.
Boniface, currently the top scorer for Leverkusen this season, has not only made waves in the Bundesliga but also clinched the Rookie award for three consecutive months.
The young striker has now sets his sights on AFCON.
“It is the dream of every football player from Nigeria to represent their country and win a trophy for the country. So, we’re looking forward to the next AFCON,” Boniface told DW after their 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday.
Nigeria’s provisional squad for AFCON is slated for submission to CAF on December 14, with the final squad list anticipated just days before the tournament kicks off.
Drawn into Group A, Nigeria is set to contend with Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea Bissau, promising an intense competition for both Boniface and his compatriots.
