Newly crowned CAF Men’s Player of the Year, Ademola Lookman, has shared his thoughts on Victor Boniface’s omission from the prestigious award shortlist.
Boniface’s absence raised eyebrows among Nigerians, particularly after his stellar season with Bayer Leverkusen. The striker himself expressed disappointment over not being nominated.
Speaking with SportyTV after the award ceremony in Marrakech, Morocco, Lookman, who clinched the accolade on Monday night, acknowledged Boniface’s incredible achievements but admitted that he does not make the rules.
“Obviously, my teammate Boniface had an amazing season last year. I think with his personal achievements and goals; winning two titles with Leverkusen.
They were unbeaten in their league it’s special – maybe he could have been nominated. But I don’t make the rules.”
A Phenomenal Year for Lookman
The Atalanta star had a sensational season for both club and country. He delivered a hat-trick in the Europa League final, guiding Atalanta to victory over Bayer Leverkusen and solidifying his status as one of Europe’s elite forwards.
On the international stage, Lookman played a pivotal role in the Super Eagles’ journey to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final in Côte d’Ivoire, scoring three goals as Nigeria finished runners-up.
Reflecting on his decision to switch national allegiance to Nigeria, Lookman described it as a career-defining moment.
“Massive. It was a big turning point in my career. Ever since I put on the Super Eagles jersey, it has been fruitful.”
Lookman’s Historic Achievement
Lookman’s triumph sees him join an elite list of Nigerian footballers who have won the prestigious award, including:

– Emmanuel Amuneke (1994)
