Christy Ucheibe and SL Benfica will not be part of the 2024/25 UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage after a 2-0 home loss to Hammarby on Wednesday, resulting in a 3-2 aggregate defeat.
Benfica enjoyed a 2-0 victory in the first leg away from home,m. However, they were unable to hold on to their advantage in the return leg.
Hammarby’s Julie Blakstad leveled the aggregate score with a 16th-minute goal, assisted by Vilde Hasund. Cathinka Tankberg scored the winning goal late in the game, securing Hammarby’s spot in the group stage.
Super Falcons midfielder Christy Ucheibe, whohas been present in their qualification journey, missed the match due to an injury sustained in the first leg.
She will be sidelined for several months.
Benfica, last season’s quarterfinalists and Portuguese quadruple champions, will now have to wait another year to participate in the Champions League.
