Bayer Leverkusen Star Reflects on AFCON Snub

Nigerian winger, Nathan Tella has conveyed his disappointment after being omitted from the Africa Cup of Nations 2023 team.

Despite completing paperwork weeks prior to the tournament to represent Nigeria, the Bayer Leverkusen star found himself excluded from Jose Peseiro’s squad for the Cup of Nations.

Tella played the FIFA World cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, only to be left out for the AFCON.

Expressing his disappointment, the winger said that,”In my head, I wanted to play in the African Cup of Nations and I wasn’t called up.”

“I was quite disappointed but then, at the same time, I looked at it as an opportunity to play here.”

With four goals and one assist in fourteen Bundesliga games for Leverkusen this season, Tella remains optimistic about future opportunities.

Nigeria returns to action this June for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa, and the 24 year-old is hopeful of earning a spot in the squad.
