Nigerian defender Leon Balogun says he’s enjoying his his time with Championship side Wigan Athletics.
The former Hannover and Mainz 05 defender secured a loan switch to the Latics back in January and has delivered good performance for the team.
Balogun has now helped Wigan to three clean sheets so far and was rewarded with a place in last week championship team of the week after another impressive outing.
Speaking with the club’s official website, the Russia 2018 defender has now revealed that he has been following the team since their FA Cup triumph over Manchester City in 2008.
He said, “My first encounter with Wigan was actually during my first year as a professional in 2008.
“I was playing for Hanover in a friendly when they were still in the Premier League back then.
“Their FA Cup win over Manchester City stands out, and my friend Victor Moses from Nigeria was a big player for them.
“Then you have Dan Burn, who used to play here, and he told me a little bit about the group while Gaetan Bong began his career in England with the club.”he said.
Wigan are unbeaten in their last five matches and have won three matches and recorded three clean sheet as well in six matched, a run that has lifted the fans of the club, as they battle to beat the drop.
“If you go on a run it’s amazing where it can take you. It’s more physical than the Premier League, but my focus wasn’t on that. It was more about finding a rhythm as quickly as possible and playing matches.
“I’m enjoying it, especially when you’re on the sort of run we are at the moment. We’re playing well as a team and it’s great to be a part of.” He concluded.
Meanwhile, Balogun has been included in the Super Eagles 24 man squad for the upcoming 2021 African cup of nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone later this month.
