Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface marked his return from injury in style, netting the opener in Bayer Leverkusen’s 3-1 victory over Hoffenheim at the BayArena on Sunday.
After missing three months due to a hamstring injury, Boniface was restored to Leverkusen’s starting XI and wasted no time making an impact.
The Nigerian forward broke the deadlock in the 15th minute, finishing off an assist from Alex Grimaldo. Jeremie Frimpong doubled the hosts’ lead just four minutes later, putting Leverkusen in firm control.
The game saw seven yellow cards, with Grimaldo receiving a second booking in the 61st minute, reducing Leverkusen to 10 men.
Hoffenheim’s new signing, Gift Orban, pulled one back in the 63rd minute, scoring in back-to-back Bundesliga games. However, the visitors couldn’t find a way back, has Leverkusen sealed the win.
Boniface Addresses Transfer Speculation
Boniface was heavily linked with a €70 million move to Saudi side Al-Nassr in the transfer window, but the deal collapsed. Speaking about the speculation, he reaffirmed his commitment to Leverkusen.
“There has been a lot of speculation here and there. But I like playing here and want to do my best for the team,” Boniface told sportsboom.com.
“Whatever happens in the future will happen, but at the moment I’m only thinking about helping Leverkusen achieve our goals.
Transfer rumors are normal in football. It’s always flattering when big clubs show interest, but my focus is 100 percent on Bayer Leverkusen.”
“Every game is an opportunity. I want to contribute goals, assists, and energy to the team. I just want to stay fit, keep playing, and keep improving. If I manage that, I think everything else will fall into place.”
Boniface has now scored seven goals in 11 Bundesliga appearances, with nine goals across all competitions this season.
Nathan Tella also featured for Xabi Alonso’s side but was subbed off in the 42nd minute.
With the victory, Leverkusen remain second in the Bundesliga, six points behind leaders Bayern Munich, as they continue their push for the title.
