Nottingham Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo is optimistic that Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi will soon rediscover his best form for the club.
The Nigerian international has struggled for game time this season, often playing second fiddle to Chris Wood, leading to transfer speculation linking him with a potential move to West Ham.
Speaking to the club’s website, Espirito Santo expressed his belief in Awoniyi’s ability to bounce back and make a strong impact.
“He can absolutely get back [to that previous level],” Espirito Santo said. “Yes, absolutely, because he shows it every day.
He works very hard, and we cannot forget Taiwo’s importance to Forest and the history of what he has done for the club.
I was fortunate enough to see many of the games that Taiwo was involved in and his performance level was very high. I am absolutely confident that he will get back to that.”
Espirito Santo acknowledged that fitness, confidence, and minutes on the pitch have been key factors in Awoniyi’s current situation but praised his professionalism.
“It is fitness, it is confidence, and it is another factor – which is minutes on the pitch, because Chris [Wood] is doing very well. Taiwo recognises that and is humble enough to know he has to wait for his moment.
“His moment is not going to be when he starts; it’s going to be when he comes on in the game. He scored against Wolves to close down the game, and that’s what we want from Taiwo.
“He has to be ready, whether it’s minute one or minute 90. The other part is mentality, and I am sure he is totally focused and committed to the club.”
Awoniyi could get another chance to impress on Sunday, as Nottingham Forest continues their Premier League campaign at home against Southampton at the City Ground.
