Awoniyi steers Nottingham Forest into Carabao Cup quarter final

Taiwo Awoniyi scored one of the goals as Nottingham Forest secured a comfortable 4-1 win over Blackburn Rovers in Carabao Cup third round game at Ewood Park on Wednesday.

The Nigerian international got his goal in the 79th minutes, with Wales international Brennan Johnson scoring twice and Jesse Lingard getting the other goal.

The former Union Berlin forward also forced Blackburn goalkeeper into a save two when tapped a close-range effort straight at him.

Nottingham Forest have now reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1994.

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper was full of praises for Awoniyi and rest of the squad after ruthless performance in front of goal.

Cooper said: “I thought we could have been a bit more ruthless and aggressive with our play and because we weren’t quite at that, we allowed Blackburn to have some moments.

“We should have been out of sight after 15 or 20 minutes – eventually we got the first goal but I wanted the team to step on and take the game away from Blackburn.

“I never felt like we did not control the game but I did not like our decision making after the goal. We should never have been in that situation in the first place.”

Forest, will travel to Old Trafford to for their Premier League clash against Manchester United on December 27.
