Two-time champion Rafael Nadal cruised through his first-round match 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 against the diminutive Israeli Dudi Sela. With a difference of four inches in height and 20 kilos in weight between the two players, this had the feel of a mismatch from the start and Nadal duly pummelled his weaker opponent into submission with a series of heavy serves and forehands. After his win, Nadal was pressed on whether he would be in favour of Wimbledon bringing in a shot clock to monitor how long players take between points – as the US Open will do later this…

England had previously lost all three World Cup shootouts and three of four in the European Championship but prevailed on Tuesday when Mateus Uribe and Carlos Bacca failed to convert, leaving Eric Dier to win the game for England. England have had many great players over the years. Bobby Charlton, Alan Shearer, Gary Lineker, David Beckham, Paul Scholes; the list goes on and on, but none…

Algerian Superstar Riyad Mahrez looks set to complete his long-awaited move to Manchester City later this week, www.brila.net has confirmed. According to reports, No deal has been agreed as yet, but we understand Leicester will receive around £60m – some way short of their £80m January asking price. If City do clinch a deal for the Algeria international winger at that fee, it will represent a coup for their patient approach to trying to land the player, after walking away from negotiations in January. Back then, the Foxes wanted £80million for Mahrez, while City were offering £60million, after their bid to…

Super Eagles Skipper Mikel John Obi has revealed he played in his side’s World Cup clash against Argentina last week despite being told his father had been kidnapped just beforehand. The 31-year-old also told the Guardian he could not reveal it to anybody at the time in what must have been an experience more traumatic than many of us can imagine. “I had to suppress the trauma. I took a call four hours before kick-off to tell me what had happened. “I was emotionally distraught and I had to make the decision about whether I was mentally ready to play. I…
Sweden have been a revelation at this World Cup but Switzerland are an efficient and consistent unit which will be difficult to overcome. Russia’s shock penalty shootout victory over Spain has blown open this side of the knockout draw, with one of England, Colombia, Croatia, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland certain to reach the final on July 15. Spain’s defeat ensures that at least one of this year’s finalists will not have reached the title decider for half a century – if at all – and will give the Swiss and the Swedes a timely boost with both sides confident of…
