Manchester United see Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose as a potential solution to their search for a wide player in the transfer market, as Jose Mourinho continues to assess his options, given the club’s frustrated pursuits of Internazionale’s Ivan Perisic and Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale. The Portuguese would have wanted to sign a wide attacker and two full-backs in this window, but with United only likely to bring in four or five players, the forward role had been seen as a priority. That had seen the Old Trafford hierarchy come close to an agreement with Internazionale, only for the Italian club to refuse to budge on their £48m valuation, while…

It wasn’t Lionel Messi who received the loudest ovation at Camp Nou on Monday. And it certainly wasn’t Neymar, who is long gone having left for Paris Saint-Germain last week. Instead, it was Neymar’s Brazilian compatriots, Chapecoense, who Barcelona invited to take part in this season’s Joan Gamper Trophy match after last year’s devastating plane crash which killed 71 people, who were given the biggest reception. They were also given €250,000 by Barca as way of a donation. It wasn’t just a noisy reception, either, but an emotional one. The final three players to be welcomed on to the Camp…
It is hardly the most prestigious of competitions, but the Super Cup appeared to mean a lot to Romelu Lukaku as he prepared to take a decisive penalty in Prague four years ago. Looking back at that moment now, at a player who has since become associated with power, composure and a persuasive air of confidence, it is striking to see just how vulnerable he looked. After nine perfect kicks, with Chelsea 5-4 behind to Bayern Munich in the shoot-out, it was up to the 20-year-old, part of Jose Mourinho’s first-team plans after an outstanding season at West Bromwich Albion, to score and force sudden death. His miss,…

It says a lot about the actual stakes of the Super Cup that this was the primary issue ahead of notionally prestige match between two of Europe’s premier clubs. But then you remember that for all the other angles brought up beyond Bale – Mourinho’s history with Real, Mourinho’s history with Sergio Ramos and Marcelo, Mourinho’s history with Zidane, Cristiano Ronaldo’s…
Could this be why Chelsea aren’t planning to spend hugely any more this Transfer window?
