Augsburg Coach Thorup Gives Onyeka Update After Nigeria’s Ordeal in Libya

Augsburg manager, Jess Thorup has confirmed that Nigerian midfielder Frank Onyeka will be available for selection in the club’s upcoming Bundesliga fixture against Freiburg, despite a tumultuous experience during international duty.

Onyeka was part of the Nigeria squad that faced a difficult situation after traveling to Libya for the second leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers earlier this week.

The team had won the first leg 1-0 in Uyo, where Onyeka featured for 60 minutes.

However, upon arrival in Libya, the Nigerian players and staff were held hostage at the airport for over 12 hours by local authorities, deprived of food, water, and internet access.

The second leg match was eventually canceled after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) withdrew the team, and the players returned to Nigeria on Monday evening.

Despite the ordeal, Onyeka has since rejoined his club, and Thorup confirmed that the midfielder is in good condition ahead of the weekend’s match.

“He said it was crazy—14, 16 hours without food or drink,” Thorup told Sport1.

“He came back on Thursday morning. Everything is okay, and he is fully focused on Freiburg.” He concluded.

Onyeka has featured in four league game for Augsburg since his loan move from Brentford.
