Atalanta’s head coach, Gian Piero Gasperini has urged winger, Ademola Lookman to step up his game, expressing concerns about the player’s tendency to go unnoticed during matches.

Lookman, 26, failed to find the net in Atalanta’s recent 1-1 draw against Sporting CP in the Europa League on Wednesday.

This marks an ongoing goal-scoring drought for the Nigerian in European competitions since joining the club last summer, with the dry spell dating back to December 2017.

“We all see Lookman‘s potential and speed, but we must admit that he once didn’t play so offensively,” Gasperini said per Pazzi di Fanta.

“He used to score six or seven goals a year, while now he is quick, good at dribbling, and even strong with his head.

“I encourage him because every now and then, he hides from the game, but I believe that when he approaches the area, he can become a reference player for our team.”

Despite featuring in six European matches for Atalanta this season without scoring, Lookman has showcased commendable performances in the Italian Serie A.

Gasperini’s call for improvement highlights the coach’s expectations for a more impactful contribution from the former Leicester City player on the European stage.
