Southampton’s hopes were dashed as they faced a narrow 2-1 defeat at home against Hull City in the Championship, despite Joe Aribo scoring his first goal of the year.
Hull swiftly secured a two-goal advantage courtesy of strikes from Morocco’s Anass Zaroury and Portugal’s Fábio Carvalho before Aribo entered the pitch at half-time.
The Nigerian injected hope into Southampton’s campaign by reducing the deficit with a powerful strike from just inside the area in the 88th minute.
However, Southampton’s spirited late effort proved insufficient to salvage at least a point from the intense encounter.
