Alloy Agu Makes Case for Francis Uzoho

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper and trainer, Alloy Agu has called for more understanding among fans over the goalkeeping department in the team.

The 1994 AFCON winner has said that the goalkeepers have to be tough mentally and be ready to fight whenever they’re summoned.

‘In Ghana, Francis Uzoho was the best goalkeeper, the man of the match,” Agu told BRL. “And coming to against Ghana in Abuja, he made an error. Does that mean that Francis Uzoho is not good? The answer is no.”

“Football is made of error, but you try as much as possible to minimize it. And you go back there and make sure you prove everybody right. You don’t have to prove everybody right because I know we love football so much.

“We are passionate about it and therefore my prayer goes to the whole team. The whole team that God should grant them the favor they’re talking about.”

“Football comes with a lot of pressure, football comes with a lot of challenge, and you have to face it as a human being and sub-mantle such challenge and pressure.”

Speaking on the mentality of goalkeepers generally, he also said, “You have to understand that goalkeeping is so important.

“If the striker makes mistakes, the defender can do something to retrieve it, vis-a-vis the midfielder, vis-a-vis the defender.

“But for goalkeepers, when they make that mistake, it is only the net that stops it and everybody can easily find it.”

The Super Eagles have wrapped up their pre-AFCON training camp, and will return to Lagos before departing to Cote d’Ivoire for the Africa Cup of Nations.
