Super Eagles goalkeepers trainer Alloy Agu has praised Daniel Akpeyi for his superlative form for his club Kaizer Chiefs this season.
Akpeyi who was recalled back to the Super Eagles for AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Lesotho back in November after first choice Francis Uzoho sustained a long time injury was voted the best player in South African premier league for the month of September and October respectively.
His form for the Amakhosi might have caught many by surprise, but not Alloy Agu who told brila.net in an exclusive interview that the 32 year old has been an amazing servant for the national team.
“He’s has done well and his team is topping the table in South African premiership, that shows he’s quality goalkeeper and we the coaches are happy whenever our players are doing well”.
Akpeyi has been criticised and accused of putting a below per performance whenever he’s in the colour of the Super Eagles, Agu however refuted claims and added that the former Chuppa United man can not be blamed for some of the goals he conceeded while in the action for the Super Eagles.
“That’s not true, he was good against Lesotho , a goalkeeper is not judge by the goals he conceeded, but with number of superlative saves he made and how he help the team move forward.” He added.
“The two games we played against Republic of Benin and Lesotho , there was no mistakes that can be credited to Akpeyi, that he conceeded in those games doesn’t mean he’s not doing well or that he’s shaky.”
The former international added that there is always a room for improvement, not just for the goalkeepers, but every Super Eagles players.
“In his club he’s doing well and the national team too , but sometimes we are all human we make one or two mistakes but we must look at the good things he has done”.
“Yes, there is always a room for improvement and it not just for the goalkeepers but for the players . He concluded.
