Akwa United kept their hopes of qualifying for a CAF competition next season alive with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Shooting Stars at the Nest of Champions on Monday.
Akwa United started the game on a front foot and they registered their first goal in the 14th minute. The goal was scored by Babatunde Bello.
The second goal arrived on the hour mark. Naibe Akpesiri was at the right place to tap in Seth Mayi’s pin-point cross from the right flank.
Shooting Stars forward Chidera Eze then scored in the 81st minute to halve Akwa United’s lead.
The final moments was nervy, but the League Champions held on to their slim advantage.
Akwa United remain 8th on the table with 32 points and they trail Rangers, who currently occupy the last continental spot, by five points.
They have now picked four points from a possible six under new Coach Deji Ayeni.
