Once upon time, it felt like Daniel Akpeyi was within touching distance of his first silverware since moving to South Africa from the NPFL, but the wait, it seems will be extended even further, after Kaizer Chiefs suffered another Cup heartbreak over the weekend.
Akpeyi was suspended for the Telkom Cup semi-final clash against Maritzburg and young Bruce Bvuma deputized in his stead, with Itumeleng Khune still injured.
Bvuma was the difference between humiliation and saving face for Amakhosi as the goalie kept the result to a respectable 2-1.
Ernst Middendorp’s men had been on a roll of eight games winning streak, their last defeat before coming in September, and Akpeyi has been a big part of that rich vein of form.

This failed Cup ambition echoes of last season’s disappointment when they lost 1-0 to TS Galaxy in the NedBank Cup.
