Daniel Akpeyi lost his place as Kaizer Chiefs first choice goalkeeper with the return of Itumeleng Khune, following the latter’s return from a six-month long injury spell.
Khune was between the sticks for Amakhosi in a PSL game on Tuesday, as they shutout AmaZulu in a 2-0 win at the Zwelithini Stadium, and Head Coach Ernst Middendorp hailed his Nigerian goalie for respectfully stepping down from his first choice duties.
“Daniel Akpeyi played a fantastic five games so far, it was a bit tough for me but the truth is from 2006/07 Itumeleng Khune has been in the team, he’s the captain and it was the right time for him to return,” the German said, per Nkululeko Dladla [Kick off].
‘We saw him through preparations on how far he is, had a long chat with Akpeyi as he had a fantastic start, it was tough but he understood it and showed a lot of respect about it.”
Akpeyi, 33, joined Kaizer Chiefs mid way through the last season and his way back to the side’s starting XI is uncertain.
