African Games: Tobi Amusan wins Double Gold

At the 13th African Games in Ghana, Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the Women’s 100m hurdles, clinched two gold medals, and elevated Team Nigeria’s overall medal count.

Amusan secured her first gold in the 100m hurdles, successfully defending her title in the event.

She later anchored Nigeria’s 4x100m relay team to another gold medal, clocking a time of 43.05 seconds with Liberia and Ghana coming in second and third respectively.

The women’s 100m hurdles saw Amusan dominate from start to finish, crossing the line in 12.89 seconds to claim the gold, although slower than her Games record set in Rabat 2019

However, the standout performer of the day was Chidi Okezie in the men’s 400m race.

Determined to upgrade his bronze medal status from previous competitions, Okezie surged past race favorites from Zambia and Senegal in the final stretch, clocking a personal best time of 45.06 seconds.

This remarkable feat marked Nigeria’s fastest time in recent years.

In the women’s 400m race, defending champion Mary Morra of Kenya proved her dominance, outpacing Nigerian medal hopeful Esther Elo Joseph in the final stretch.

Despite Joseph’s strong performance in her African Games debut, Morra’s finishing kick secured her victory with a time of 50.57 seconds, leaving Joseph to settle for silver at 51.61 seconds.

Burkina Faso’s Sita Sibiri clinched the bronze with a time of 51.71 seconds.
