Team Nigeria triumphed in the women’s wrestling event at the 2023 African Games, securing a total of six gold medals on Sunday.

Mercy Genesis claimed the first gold in the women’s 50kg freestyle, overpowering Egyptian wrestler Nada Mohammed with a flawless performance, securing victory 7-0.

Not to be outdone, Christiana Ogunsanya showcased her prowess in the 53kg division, delivering a one-sided dominance by defeating Ivorian opponent Bakayoko 11-0, securing Nigeria’s second gold medal.

Adekuoroye Odunayo, a three-time Commonwealth champion, exhibited her prowess by defeating Zineb Hassoune in just 24 seconds, securing the third gold medal for Nigeria in the 57kg finals.

Esther Kolawole, making her debut at the African Games, impressed in the 62kg category, securing Nigeria’s fourth gold medal with a victory by technical superiority.

Meanwhile, the legendary Blessing Oborududu, clinched Nigeria’s fifth gold medal after a convincing 14-4 victory over her Cameroonian opponent Ngiri in the 68kg finals.

Completing the remarkable sweep on Sunday was Hannah Reuben, who emerged victorious in the 76kg category.

These outstanding victories propelled Nigeria up the medals table, solidifying their prowess in women’s wrestling on the African stage.
