Former Scotland international, Kris Boyd has shared his thoughts on Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers, acknowledging his ability but questioning his reliability in crucial moments.
Dessers has faced heavy scrutiny since joining Rangers, with criticism often directed at his inconsistency in front of goal.
This season, former manager Philippe Clement relegated him to the bench, preferring Moroccan youngster Hamza Igamane.
However, as Rangers struggled in attack, Clement was eventually sacked, leading to a shift in Dessers’ role.
The Nigerian forward fought his way back into the starting lineup after a standout performance in the Scottish Cup, where he netted a hat-trick in a 5-0 victory over Fraserburgh.
He followed that up with a goal against Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League, further proving his worth.
Last weekend, Dessers played a pivotal role in Rangers’ dramatic 4-3 comeback victory against Dundee, scoring the decisive goal in stoppage time.
Despite his contributions, Boyd remains unconvinced about the striker’s ability to deliver in pressure situations.
Boyd’s Verdict on Dessers
Speaking to Scottish Sun Sport, Boyd highlighted Dessers’ inconsistency in front of goal:
“For me, I think it’s the type of chances that Cyriel Dessers misses. Because he could miss an easy chance now and the next minute, he’ll just pluck one out of the air like at Old Trafford where he scored an unbelievable finish.”
The former Rangers striker further emphasized that while Dessers is capable of scoring great goals, he does not see him as a clinical finisher:
“I think he’s a scorer of good goals but I don’t think he’s a natural finisher. But his numbers are decent.
“You do feel kind of sorry for him sometimes because he is going to get criticized because of the chances he misses. And you think in games where you’re just need a goalscorer just to snuff out an opportunity to kill a game off or to steal something, (Dessers won’t deliver). But he won’t throw in the towel, he will go back for more.”
Dessers’ Form Under Ferguson and Future at Rangers
Rangers’ hopes of winning the Scottish Premiership this season are all but over, with Celtic holding a commanding 13-point lead at the top.
As a result, attention has already shifted toward next season and whether Dessers will remain at the club.
The Nigerian forward has been in fine form since Barry Ferguson took charge, scoring four goals in his last four league matches, including the match-winner against Dundee.
Overall, Dessers has 30 goal contributions this season 23 goals and seven assists in 46 appearances across all competitions.
With his improved form, speculation is growing over his future at Ibrox.
Some believe the Super Eagles striker could remain beyond the summer, while others feel Rangers might look for a more clinical finisher to lead their attack next season.
