My season starts now — Ekong

William Troost-Ekong had nothing but praises for Watford’s head coach Rob Edwards, despite not playing regularly for the team.

Ekong was given a rare opportunity to make an impression against Sunderland at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

The Nigerian international wasn’t at his usual best, but managed to cover himself with glory as the Hornets played out a 2-2 draw, with Sunderland equalizing few minutes to the end of the game.

In a interview with Watford Observer, Ekong rued the inability of the squad to see out what would have been their fourth win of the season, but singled out their manager for his impact on the team.

“He came in to change the narrative from last season and despite the results, he has done that. All the boys back him 100 per cent.

“We’ve been going through a difficult spell of not getting the wins we would like to but we are all responsible for that.

“He tries to fill us with confidence and give us the licence to play’, The Nigerian international said.

Ekong was linked with an exit from the club during the transfer window, but the 28-year-old stayed.

The player however said, he’s happy to remain in London and want to build on the performance against Black Cats.

“My season has only really started now. This is what I want to focus on. There was some unrest in the transfer window but I’m here now, I’m a Watford player and I’m ready to fight for the shirt,” he concluded.
