The Super Falcons of Nigeria are proud of their performance against United States Women’s National team in Washington DC.
Randy Waldrum’s tutored side lost 2-1 on Tuesday, but it was an improved performance from the 4-0 defeat they suffered in the first meeting last Sunday.
The American went ahead in the first half, benefitting from naive defending from Tosin Demehin who diverted a cross into her own net.
Mallory Pugh received the ball on the left wing off a pass from defender Emily Fox who sent in a low cross into the heart of the box aiming to meet Horan’s run. Demehin however stretched to clear the pass to safety but accidentally knocked the ball into her own net to open the scoring.
The Falcons responded well in the second half. Ogbonna played a long ball across the field to meet Kanu on the run. The halftime substitute settled the ball and dribbled into the left side of the box before firing a right-footed into the upper right corner to equalize.
Megan Rapinoe then received the ball on a run into the left side of the box and chipped in a cross to Lavelle. She finished with a diving header, to give the hosts another win.
Meanwhile, With Uchenna Kanu’s goal early in the 2nd half, it was the first time the Falcons are scoring against the USA since Mercy Akide scored in a 1-3 defeat at the Sydney Olympics 2000
“Not the results we wished for but proud to end our 20-year-long scoreless streak against @USWNT. We’ll take away a lot of lessons and positives.” Reads a short statement from the team’s official Twitter handle.
The Falcons will be back in action against Japan later next month.
