The experienced gaffer was held in high regard in Ikenne after guiding the Remo Stars to third place in the Nigeria Professional Football League last season, but leaving the Club after the landmark.
Gbenga Ogunbote has lifted the lid on why he left Remo Stars, with the former Sunshine Stars handler admitting he overachieved at the Club.
Ogunbote joined the club after gaining promotion to the elite division in 2021, and bookmakers expected the team to struggle once again, due to their poor history in the Premier League.
Against all odds, Ogunbote turned things around and not only helped the team to retain the elite status, but he also led them to their first continental ticket as Remo Stars finished third with 65 points.
The management of the team however stunned NPFL followers, by announcing the exit of the manager and Daniel Ogunbodede as his successor.
The former Sunshine Stars and Rangers manager told www.brila.net why both parties parted ways.
“I signed a one-year contract with the club and I was charged to keep the team in the Premier League, which we achieved and surpassed.”
“I’m happy with what we did over there and it is normal that we both move on to the next phase.”
Quizzed on how tough it was to leave and if the club made effort to extend his contract, Ogunbote said :
“You have known me for some time now, I’m a person who respects the agreement and I can tell you, my relationship with the club is fine and the transition is mutual.”
“To buttress my point, I even went home with the Club’s official car yesterday, before I came back to drop it. So everything is fine. We both respect the agreement.” He told www.brila.net.
Ogunbote is expected to announce his next destination soon, with many clubs showing interest in his services.
