Akwa United win still in my mind — Says Rangers boss Abdul Maikaba

Abdul Maikaba guided Enugu Rangers to an emphatic league win against his former side Akwa United on Sunday.

Maikaba’s Rangers thrashed Akwa United 3-0 to secure their first win on the road this season and boost their chances of picking continental ticket come end of season.

 

After a goalless first half, The Flying Antelopes ran riot in the second 45 minutes as they put three past Akwa United goalkeeper and coach Ali Jolomi was condemned to a defeat at home since replacing Kennedy Boboye.

 

The victory lifted Rangers to third position on the league table with 31 points from 18 matches, while Akwa United who are defending Champions remains 6th and 12 points behind leaders Rivers United.

 

Speaking at the press conference, Maikaba has some great words for his former team .

 

“Actually I’m happy about the points, but would have preferred the results against another team . Akwa United is still in my mind and I don’t Akwa United is a bad side .”

 

“What I have seen here is  a group of young players who needed time to gel . This results should not discourage them and thank my boys for this wonderful performance.”

 

On the importance of the victory, Maikaba said :

 

” It is necessary for us to fight for this results , because they are so close to us on the league table and victory means either of us can move to third position on the table . I want us to be in good position for continental position and with this results we are on course.

 

“At the beginning of the game, Akwa United got chances to score and determine the outcome of the game in the first half, but they missed them and that gave my boys confidence to continue pushing.”

 

“I told the boys to calm down and get the first goal in the game to put them under pressure.” He concluded.

 

Maikaba managed Akwa United in 2017 and led them to Aiteo Cup glory, before joining Plateau United from where he moved to Rangers .
