Austin Jay Jay Okocha said Cameroon talisman Vincent Aboubakar should have been awarded the best player award at the just concluded African Cup of Nations.
Aboubakar scored eight goals in five matches to claim the Golden Boot and also helped Cameroon win consolation bronze in the tournament.
However, Senegal’s Sadio Mane who scored three goals was named tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, although he guided the Lions of Teranga to glory at Olembe Stadium in Yaounde.
Mane scored the decisive penalty as Senegal defeated Egypt on penalty shootout on Sunday .
Speaking on the award, Okocha stated, Aboubakar deserves the accolade than Sadio Mane.
“For me Aboubakar is the best player of the tournament. He deserves to be named the best player of the tournament.”
“After all he did, I think he earned it. But he was deservingly rewarded for the goals that he scored. “
“But of course, it’s always good to have teammates that provide you with the services. You don’t have to take away the contributions of the other players as well. But it’s great to have a good finisher that will crown the whole hard work of the team,”Okocha said.
