Two second-half goals from Fortune Omoniwari and Nelson Esor was enough to earn Rivers United bragging rights over MFM FC at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in midweek.
After a goalless first half Rivers United took the lead early in the second period, with Omoniwari’s fourth league goal of the season.
The striker fired home the match opener in the 49th minute, but the visitors almost equalised moments later when Akanni freed Julius Emiloju on the left but the left back’s effort goes inches wide.
The hosts doubled their lead in the 74th minute, Esor finished off a sweet move after an exchange of passes with Godwin Aguda.
Rivers United climbed to fifth on the NPFL standings with 26 points from 15 matches, while MFM now sit in sixteenth place on the log with 17 points from 15 games.
