A German documentary investigating doping in Brazil has accused Roberto Carlos of having taken banned performance-enhancing substances in 2002, the year he won the World Cup, but the retired player has insisted that he always played clean.
Although a doctor in the film said he’d helped the left-back, Roberto Carlos has claimed not to even know him.
“I strongly dispute the irresponsible allegations made by [German TV channel] ARD and I reaffirm that I never used any trick to gain an advantage over my colleagues,” he said in a statement published on Globoesporte.
“The report cites the name of a doctor who I have never known in my life, and my lawyers are already working to tackle these allegations in court.
“The former Real Madrid player pointed to the fact that he was tested at the time and to his anti-doping record.
“They would have easily detected if I had used any prohibited product,” he suggested.
“I never gave a positive test throughout my career.”I have always supported clean and fair play.
“When asked by the documentary makers, the Brazilian FA declined to comment on the allegations.
