Daniel Akpeyi will not feature in this weekend’s Cup game when Kaizer Chiefs face Highland Park.
Akpeyi has been Chiefs’ first choice this season in the league, but the Nigerian will sit out the Cup games for Itumeleng Khune who is Coach Ernst Middendorp’s pick.
Khune lost his place to the 33 year-old Nigerian and will make his second cup appearance after a first round 1-0 win over Royal Eagles.
He has also made two league appearances and with the shocking 2-1 defeat to Maritzburg last weekend, there has been calls for Akpeyi to be dropped for 31 year-old Khune.
The Amakhosi Legend himself also spoke recently about fighting to win his place back in the team and return as number one.
Khune spent seven months on the side-lines after a shoulder injury and was later kept out after picking up a groin injury, which saw him spend another six months before his return to action against the Eagles last week.
“I’ll bounce back and make sure I perform very well on the field to reclaim my position at Chiefs and at Bafana,” the former Bafana Bafana first choice told Chad Kelly-Klate of kickoff.
“I don’t feel entitled, but I will work hard to reclaim [those positions] because that’s where I have been for years, so it’s very hard for that transition of being number-one for such a very long time [to being out of the game for so long].
“I need to get back to my best in order for me to reclaim the jerseys, so I will work hard even when nobody sees.”
