Former West Brom defender backs Southgate’s decision to drop Sterling from England squad

Former West Brom and Super Eagles defender Ifeanyi Udeze has backed England Manager Gareth Southgate over his decision to drop Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling from the England squad.

The Manchester City forward will not be considered for England’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro on Thursday after a row with Liverpool defender Gomez.

The pair clashed towards the end of City’s 3-1 Anfield loss to Liverpool on Sunday and it is understood Sterling and Gomez were again involved in an exchange after meeting for England duty on Monday.

Speaking on Brila FM’s Breakfast show, Ifeanyi Udeze said Gareth’s decision will serve as a warning to other players in the squad while citing the Super Eagles’ Tunisia 2004 scenario.

The former Super Eagles world Cup defender said National team camp rules are mostly different and are more strict but must be adhered with.

“In 2004, some of our players were said to have been out at an odd hour which was not even true, but since they were not found in their different rooms at the set bed time, they have to be sent home”.

A statement read: “The FA can confirm Raheem Sterling will not be considered for Thursday’s EURO 2020 qualifier against Montenegro as a result of a disturbance in a private team area at St. George’s Park today. He will remain with the squad.”

It is a remarkable situation and is sure to dominate the build-up to Thursday’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro, which not only offers the chance to seal progress but is England’s 1,000th international fixture.
