Liverpool loanee Awoniyi struggles on home debut for Mainz 05

Taiwo Awoniyi was underwhelming in his home debut for Mainz 05, coming off the bench in a 3-1 defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga.

Awoniyi was second half substitute (65′) with the scoreline tied at 1-1 inside the Opel Arena.

The Nigerian managed just one shot in 25 minutes of action on Saturday, and per whoscored.com was rated 5.8; the lowest of any player with minutes in match.

So far, the Liverpool loanee has made two appearances (33′) for Die Nullfünfer in the league.

However, it has been a poor start for the side as they continue the search for their first win of the league season.

According to Mainz 05 Manager, Sandro Schwarz his side capitulated in the second half, but insists the players must step up.

“The first half was very even and we were tidy after the break. Conceding twice in two minutes was fatal for us,” Schwarz said after the match.

“We have to work on staying focused for the full 90, 93 minutes.”

Next week, they travel to the Allianz Arena where they’ll face BayernMunich in week 4 of the Bundesliga.
