Taiwo Awoniyi didn’t get the perfect birthday gift from his Mainz 05 teammates as they got knocked out of the DFB-Pokal by 1. FC Kaiserslautern at the weekend.

Awoniyi, who turned 22 on Monday, was an unused substitute for Mainz 05 in the first round DFB-Pokal match in Kaiserslautern.

He joined the German Bundesliga side on loan from Liverpool this summer on a season-long loan deal.

Die Nullfünfer lost 2-0; from two second half goals, and Manager Rouven Schröder described it as a difficult day.

“A difficult day, extremely disappointing for everyone. We were clearly more dominant in the first half, but lost our way after going behind. Of course, we head home feeling bad, but we’ll continue working hard.”
