Nigeria’s passage of rite to the AFCON 2019 didn’t go as planned for Gernot Rohr as his side lost 1-0 to Senegal on Sunday in Ismailia, but it also wasn’t a good hunting either for Nigeria’s group opponent Guinea.
It was small historic feat for Senegal, who ended a 17-year winless run against Nigeria; the last time being 2002 in the semi-final of the AFCON.
Incidentally, Teranga Lions Coach Aliou Cissé was in that team; the last generation of Senegal players to record a win against Nigeria.
While it must have been a bitter pill for Rohr, Guinea’s Paul Put suffered a baptism of fire against hosts and AFCON 2019 favorites, Egypt.
The Pharaohs smashed Guinea 3-1 to compound the problems of the Syli Nationale, who are now without a win in their last five games.
Nigeria and Guinea will clash on June 26 at the Alexandria Stadium.
