Iheanacho’s chance of playing in his first AFCON very slim – Rohr

Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr Says there’s huge competition in the Super Eagles attack and has warned that technical crew cannot continue to hand players invitation to the team to a platter of gold.

Rohr spoke to the media on the form of Kelechi Iheanacho who has seen his form dipped following his lack of action for Leicester City last season.

The 22-year-old forward scored once for the Foxes in the English Premier League (EPL) side last season but played a large part of the season as a back up to Jamie Vardy.

The player was a surprising inclusion in his country’s provisional squad for the 2019 AFCON finals, and as the team prepares to take on Zimbabwe in a warm-up game in Asaba this Saturday, Rohr admits the player is short of confidence but working hard in training.

”Kelechi Iheanacho has changed, he’s now much quieter. He’s working seriously but he’s lacking confidence because he didn’t play so much,” Rohr told the media.

”I went with my assistance Tunde to a game Leicester against Chelsea, I wanted to see him, he didn’t even come in.

”I see that he’s not happy but we want to make him happy, but we cannot give the players gifts, there’s competition,” he continued.

”We have a lot of wingers, we also have good center forwards now, we have three, so really we are lucky to have all these good players because the other countries are searching for strikers.”

Iheanacho has represented Nigeria at the FIFA U-17,  U-20, and the senior world cup but his chance of playing in his first African Cup of Nations in Egypt is very slim.
