Philip Abayomi gets Surprise inclusion in Nigeria’s Davis Cup Team

Six players including rising star Philip Abayomi, have been invited to camp for the 2019 Davis Cup as the NTF hopes to ensure the Country’s promotion to Group II of the Europe/Africa Zone.

The surprise inclusion of Abayomi was buffered with the invitation of the Country’s top ranked players including Sylvester Emmanuel and Joseph Imeh.

Brila.net gathered that the players who have been in camp for over two weeks will proceed on a break at the weekend to reconvene at a date yet to be specified.

The Africa Group III event will take place from September 11-14, and will see Nigeria face host nation, Kenya, Tunisia, Benin, Namibia, Algeria, Mozambique and Madagascar in the competition, which will be played on clay.

Last year, the Nigerian team, led by Joseph Imeh, Sylvester Emmanuel, Christian Paul and captained by Abdulmumin Babalola, missed out on promotion to the Africa Zone Group II after they came up short in the promotional playoff to Namibia.

Nigeria’s best Davis Cup performances were semifinal finishes in Europe/Africa Zone Group I, in 1988 and 1989.
