From Celtic Misfit to 2019 Championship’s Player of the Season – Teemu Pukki

Teemu Pukki was named as the 2019 Championship’s Player of the Season after he joined Norwich on a free transfer in 2018 with relatively little fanfare surrounding his arrival, after a mixed time in Scotland and underwhelming stints at Sevilla and Schalke.

The current top scorer in the Championship with 26 goals has also provided nine assists and he has been integral to Norwich campaign taking them to the top of the Championship.

The 29-years-old signed for Celtic in 2013 but never really adapted to life in Scotland.

Things didn’t quite work out that way though, and after just seven league goals all season he was sent on loan to Brondby with an option to buy. Though he scored only nine goals in the Danish league that season the option to buy was taken up, with Pukki scoring another nine goals in the next season.

Expectations were limited for what he could achieve at Carrow Road but he has cleared the fans doubt, by Pukki’s own admission he credits his time in Scotland for helping him to improve “Those years in Denmark changed my game and how I played football.

The last two years, in particular, were really good. I got a lot of goals and my self-confidence back after some harder times, then here at Norwich, I felt like I was at home from the first moment. The games started to go well from the beginning and I’ve just kept going.”

Pukki, however, insists he is only interested in team prizes and did not set a target on the number of goals he wanted to score because he just wants to help his team.
