UFC president Dana White says WWE Universal champion Brock Lesnar wants to fight the heavyweight championship in UFC, Daniel Cormier – and that the bout could take place in the summer.
A match between the pair under mixed martial arts rules has been discussed for some time.
Lesnar held the UFC heavyweight title for two years between 2008 and 2010, he said “I have the chance to prove that I can compete with the best fighters in the world. It is an honor.”
Lesnar has been the Universal champion in WWE since April 2017 – with the exception of a two-month stint with the belt for Roman Reigns. Lesnar’s next defence of the title comes on April 7.
Once Brock left WWE in 2004 for an eventually unsuccessful career in the National Football League in America, he joined NJPW in 2005.
After joining the UFC in 2008, Prior to his first win in UFC many fans had been questioning the former WWE Superstar’s abilities since pro wrestling isn’t considered as a real sport while MMA is a ‘real’ sporting league.
Lesnar lost his debut fight in UFC 81 but proceeded to defeat Heath Herring at UFC 87. Lesnar’s big victory came in November of 2008, during UFC 91 where he defeated Randy Couture via a Technical Knockout.
He claimed the UFC Heavyweight Championship in the second round of the fight and this solidified his position as a legitimate MMA fighter.
But, Lesnar was forced to take a leave from MMA due to recurring health issues, It was reported in November 2009 that Brock Lesnar had contracted mononucleosis due to complications after suffering damage to his intestines which resulted in the weakening of his immune system, after having surgery he returned to UFC and achieved a tie for the most number of consecutive Heavyweight title defenses.
Six months after, Brock Lesnar had to undergo surgery again for the same illness, some part of his intestines was removed.
In his return, Shortly after his third loss in UFC, Brock Lesnar announced that he would be retiring from his career in MMA to rejoin WWE as he was not feeling up to it mentally even though he felt that he was physically in great shape after his recovery from illness. But made a one-off opportunity winning return to UFC in 2016.
In all, Brock Lesnar has had a successful career in UFC, winning 6 out his 9 total fights. Though a return to the UFC seemed unlikely Dana white believes it can happen “I think both guys really want it, Cormier wants it bad,” he said.
“I know Cormier wants it bad, and Brock wants it bad. So, when two fighters want to fight each other as bad as these two do, I think it’s going to happen.
